GASLANDS - "Zombie Bash"

The set up at the start of the game...

Carnage!

Last Friday we had a go at the "zombie bash" scenario from the main GASLANDS rule book... we used 30 x 15mm sci-fi miniatures as proxy zombies (10 for each player) ... the scenario was quite good fun, but looked like it could potentially go on forever. Play tested?? The game is supposed to end when the last zombie has been picked up by being run over, but every time a vehicle is wrecked, 5 "zombies" are put back out on the board...this was happening a lot. In the end we just set a time limit on the game and the winner would be the person who had collected the most "zombies" at that point. Lizzy and Kes had equal amounts, so they had a joint win.

From B&M Bargains lorry... to WAR RIG!!

So - Inspired by my friend Kes's War Rig (see previous post)... I finally got around to working on my own.
I bought a £1.99 B&M Bargains truck... and stuck various bits of textured plasticard and stuff to it. The rusty cars on the side are just plastic party bag cars (8 for £1 from ASDA)... the chains are from a cheap toy necklace... I was lucky enough to score a bag of random miscast resin bits for £1.00 from the nice Ramshackle Miniatures chap when I met him at the UK Games expo - so that big engine thing with the arrows on was out of that. The crew are also from Ramshackle miniatures - from the 20mm vehicle conversion kit... and I built the ram out of plasticard.

GASLANDS - Bringing down the War Rig...

My friend Kes finished working on his War Rig... so this months Gaslands game night was spent playing two games of scenarios from the first Gaslands free expansion "Time Extended #1"... Kes's War Rig looks great - and is about 12 inches long (already 1/4 the length of the table!) - our two teams managed to stop him both times... but it was close!

Kes's Team - War Rig and support cars..

Liz's Team

My team - two buggies with rockets and a car with exploding ram...

The set up for the first scenario...

One of my buggies gets in position for a rocket strike...

Heavy damage causes the War Rig to Jack-Knife...

Lizzy finishes off the rig with heavy fire from the opposite side..

Boom!

I've had all the bits ready to make my own war-rig for a while - seeing Kes's in action has inspired me to make a start on it... My £1.99 B&M Bargain rig is going to be half the size of this one however!

GASLANDS - Arena of Death & Capture the Flag

We mixed things up a bit last night by trying out a couple of different scenarios from the Gaslands rulebook... First off we had a go at "Arena of Death" - all three of us had Rutherford teams... I had  two vans, one with 360 Rockets and the other with a Ram and Machine gun.... Lizzy had two pickups (I think?) - both with rockets and molotovs... and Kes had a tank... We rolled a 10 on 2d6... so there were 10 gun turrets on the board... the game was pretty quick and ended in a chain of crashes and explosions... leaving one of my vans as the only vehicle still driving despite being on fire from some of Lizzy's molotovs...

As the first game was only about an hour and a half, we decided to try another different scenario - "Capture the flag"... I had the same team as above, Lizzy had a three car Idris team all with Nitro, and Kes had a two car Miyazaki team - one buggy, and one performance car with tank tracks!... Another fun game - I managed to get in some devastating rocket attacks, Kes pulled off some crazy manoeuvers... but none of it was good enough to stop Lizzy from speeding off the board with my Flag!

The lighting on these last pics is a bit weird - it was so warm and still last night, we played outside in Lizzy's back garden and it was very dark by this point...

Gaslands - with explosion markers!

I made some explosion markers out of flickering battery operated tealights and teddybear stuffing.... they looked great on the table in our latest game of GASLANDS... I had a prison team this time, Kes tried out his new bus, and Lizzy won again....

Gaslands - My vehicles so far....

There is a lot of satisfaction to be had in modifying Hotwheels / Matchbox cars!
Here are some of the things I've used:

Plasticard sheet 1mm thickness
Plastic Rod 1mm thickness
Textured plastic card (from a model railway shop)
Wire mesh (for car body repairs - from Halfords)
Electrical Fuses (for explosive rams)
Various bits from my bits box (mainly old plastic 40k Ork weapons)
Some special conversion bits from Autokill and Ramshackle Games

Crew from Ramshackle Games...

H/O scale bus from a model railway shop...

Gaslands - the new hotness!!

I've been swept along by the excitement of the latest tabletop skirmish racing game by Osprey Games.... GASLANDS. I played a lot of CARWARS in my youth (a very complex and fiddley, strategic post-apocalyptic car racing battle game with small paper tokens... which I really enjoyed)... Gaslands has the same Mad-Max style theme as Car-Wars... but introduces much simpler mechanics... has a bit of an X-Wing feel with movement templates...and most importantly is played with MATCHBOX CARS!!! It is chaotic fun.

The accessability of this game is great.. all you really need is the rulebook, some dice and a few kids cars. The templates are all in the back of the book to photocopy (or you can download a pdf from the Gaslands website and print them out)...

People are getting into this game at various levels - from using unadulterated Matchbox and Hotwheels cars and photocopied templates.... to kitbashed and modified models, fancy scenery, 3D printed accessories and laser cut templates... (there is a whole Gaslands related cottage industry springing up around the game at the moment). There is a very friendly and helpful Facebook group - where you can see thousands of pics of peoples cars and gameplays to get some inspiration).
I've played a handful of games with some friends now, and I've got a small box of Hotwheels and Matchbox cars that I've made a start on modifying and painting... There are various themed teams in the game, so I'm going to try and make a team for each one.. Here are my first attempts:

My first 3 car attempts... turned out ok!

Team Miyazaki (Racing theme)

Team Rutherford (Military theme)

Team Warden (Prison theme)

This was the set up for an introductory game with my 2 Kids - we all had the same car stats...

I've played a few games with 2 friends from my local gaming group  -  I haven't won yet... but lots of chaotic fun was had.... (In the following pics most of the fantastic scenery was made by my friend Kes... and he painted all the other cars - he did a great job on the Mad-Max themed police cars especially)..
